Diesel Addiction's Severe Duty Steering Box for 2001-2010 GM 2500/3500 HD Trucks and Install
Share
One of my favorite products I sell is Diesel Addiction's severe duty steering box for 2001-2010 GMT800/GMT900 2500/3500HD trucks.
Based on a big-bore/'Dodge style' design, this box installs in the factory location with no modifications and features a 45mm 3-spline sector shaft, as opposed to the OEM 32mm sector shaft. Unlike other oversized aftermarket steering boxes with a 4-spline sector shaft, this box REUSES the factory-style 3-spline pitman arm. While I haven't heard of any issues with the HUNDREDS of boxes that have sold, they all feature a LIFETIME warranty!
There has been a lot of hype surrounding these boxes, but they absolutely live up to it. Coupled with a Kryptonite front end, a PSC power steering pump, my truck with 20x12.5x33 tires has zero play in the steering wheel and one finger steering (no exaggeration).
The steering box comes with three washers and two o-rings. These washers go between your steering box bolts and the OUTSIDE of the frame to prevent the bolts from bottoming out in the new steering box. The o-rings are to go on the end of your power steering lines to replace what is currently installed. For installation, you will need basic tools, a pickle fork, and a pitman arm puller if you plan to reuse your pitman arm. My recommended install procedure is as follows:
- Remove the driver's side fender liner and plastic skid plate under the truck (if applicable).
- Disconnect the lower intermediate steering shaft from the steering box and from the upper steering shaft. Retain hardware and set aside.
- Place a drain pan under the truck and remove the power steering lines from the steering box. Allow the reservoir to drain or cap lines. Dispose of all fluid in pan.
- Loosen the pitman arm nut from the tapered end that seats in the center link, but do not remove it entirely, and use a pickle fork to break the pitman arm free of the center link. Now, remove the nut and set it aside.
- Loosen the three bolts holding the steering box in the frame. Be aware that the box may drop when you remove the last bolt. I recommend supporting the box while removing the last bolt by hand to prevent this from happening.
- Remove the steering box by pushing up to allow the tapered end of the pitman arm to clear the center link and rotate towards the cab of the truck to gain clearance to drop the box out of the truck.
- Swap your pitman arm to your new Diesel addiction steering box (if reusing). If installing a new pitman arm, reuse the original nut. The supplied hardware from many aftermarket brands is the incorrect size and will damage your steering box threads.
- Reinstall your new steering box using the reverse procedure. Make sure that you use proper torque on all components and double-check your power steering lines, steering box bolts (make sure you use the washers), lower steering shaft bolts, and both pitman arm nuts.
If interested in other steering components upgrades at this time, I'd highly recommend the Kryptonite idler side assembly #KRISP10, including the idler arm and bracket, along with a weld-in frame gusset. We will have another blog post featuring a description and installation of this part available shortly.
