Coolant filters are not a new idea to the diesel engine world, and they come pre-installed on most OEM applications for medium-duty and OTR tractor-trailer rigs. The idea was tossed aside for light-duty applications, but it is still an equally important issue that needs to be addressed. Many diesel engines, such as the Powerstroke, are cast using sand. This sand is NOT completely removed from the system and leeches out of the casting over time. This sand wears away at water pump seals, hoses, and radiators, and removal can significantly increase the life of your water pump, radiator, oil cooler, and EGR cooler. Diesel engine coolant also contains additives that are designed to protect the cylinders from cavitation erosion, which naturally break down into a solid organic form. This process is called sediment fallout, the byproducts of which is equally as abrasive as sand to sensitive parts.
***1994-95 OWNERS: In 1994, Ford was transitioning from the IDI to the PSD. In the OE world, "sweeping up the floor" refers to utilizing leftover parts that are not critical to the operation before fully transitioning to the new parts. Many of these trucks have IDI cooling systems. If your radiator cap is on the steel radiator and not on the expansion bottle, you have an IDI radiator. You can use the kit, but the return must be relocated from the instructions. You need to return the coolant from the filter to the heater hose that goes to the top of the water pump. This will require a 5/8x3/8x5/8" tee from an auto parts store.
